Genre Conventions: Sports

What does the Sports Genre Portray?

·       Sports Films are those that have a sports setting (football or baseball stadium, arena, or the Olympics, etc.), competitive event (the 'big game,' 'fight,' or 'competition'), and/or athlete (boxer, racer, surfer, etc.) that are central and predominant in the story.

      Some of these films include:

·       Remember the Titans

·       King Richard

·       Hustle

Common CAMS in Sports Films

For sports film, a wide variety of angles, movements and shots can be utilized to help make this type of film. Some of the most common shots include the long shot, wide shot, close up, or a point of view. These shots can be used to form the background or capture an entire team, display the emotion on a character's face or even show what the athlete sees. Similar to shots, high angle, low angle, eye level angle, and tracking movements are also incorporated helping the flow of the film

Mis-En-Scene of Sports Films

Costume- Most costumes in sports films are generally centered towards athletic apparel like jerseys, coach's uniforms, and other clothes.

Lighting- Lighting will usually reflect the field or area in which an athlete would play on. For basketball players it is a gym while for  football players it would be outside with stadium lights.

Acting- Acting in this genre will usually be portrayed based on real life events allowing for the actors to have a lot of base material to work with and expand on

Makeup- Makeup for this genre isn't a heavy focus but it could be used for certain events

Props- Props for this genre could include balls, sports equipment, boards, playbooks, etc.

Set- Sets for this genre could take place in locations like an arena, gym, boxing ring, field, track, etc.

Editing and Sound Used

Most editing used in sports films rely on cross cutting, jump cut, montages, and dissolves. The material used in these types of films does not require heavy editing but uses some in moments to help speed up the time, show progress within a character and more.

Sound in this genre will combine diegetic and non-diegetic sound together to help build suspense and add to other elements. Music will be used in conjunction with diegetic sound to help bring life to the scene that simple diegetic sound would not.

Elements of the Genre

·           An element of this genre that entices me is the authenticity that comes with most of films. Most of them portray a true story or at least some variation of that story so it becomes another point of interest regarding this genre.

·           An element that I do not like is the need for some lesson to be taught at the end of the movie. Most films in this genre will put a large emphasis on the climax of the movie just for the protagonist’s team to lose. In doing this they try to portray a message or them within the movie instead of just letting the team succeed

No One Likes a Third Wheel, But Now We’re a Car!

For the previous projects, I have continuously worked with Joshua Newell and Aidan Jones. I have found that working with them has produced consistently good work. We are able to communicate well and our schedules coincide, allowing us to get a lot of work done. While all of this is true, our group decided to add another member to the mix. We have decided to team up with Randy Sweeting.     There were several reasons why we wanted to add another member to the group. Most of them came from our last project. When filming the music video, we had trouble splitting the work load. It was a bigger project than the first, and we wanted to include more actors. This posed a challenge to the three of us, because we would all have to be present on camera. Additionally, we wanted a different perspective. The three of us agree on a lot of things. As a result, we sometimes miss out on better ideas or more efficient practices because we are so likeminded.  ...

Get Your Popcorn.. Let’s Watch A Movie

Now that the group has chosen what genre and concept we want our final project to be, it’s time to watch a few films that follow the conventions of the sports genre. Today’s film will be Creed 2, directed by Steven Caple Jr. and starring Michael B. Jordan alongside Sylvester Stallone. What elements (Conventions) of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this  movie have?   The elements of this picture that relate to our genre would be that it is louder, grander, and greater than the first one. By maintaining an emphasis on the humanity of its main characters, it is able to correct itself. More than any punch delivered in the ring, whether Rocky will see his son again and the tribulations of the recent Creed couple are the subjects of greater suspense. The boxing scenes are fascinating and fun. Also, it gives fans a feast of entertainment.  What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that you like?  I enjoy how Adonis and Viktor...

On the Nice List

Upon further inspection, our footage wasn’t as bad as I described. We had a lot of salvageable shots. As a result, we are going to keep the footage we have already taken. However, we are going to go back to the park to take some simple shots to make the beginning less choppy. Thankfully, we won’t have to pay to be in the area of the park we have to film this at.  Plans to reshoot went well. We got the basic shots we needed to fill out certain spots in the video. Now, it’s time to edit. We choose to split up the work between us. This was to ensure that each of us had a say in the vision for the video. Splitting the work also alleviates the burden of editing it all by one’s self.  Unfortunately, the equipment I was using didn’t allow me to work with computer software to edit the video. The laptop I had was broken and unreliable, so I went back to the editing software I used in the previous project. I started by putting all the takes we took in a big project and muting each...
